Gwen Sebastian talks ‘Once Upon a Time in the West: Act I’ album (Includes interview)

“I am really excited about this album. I recorded it last year, and it is time for it to come out,” she said, prior to describing her new record as “cowgirl steam funk.”

Although it was difficult for her to select a personal favorite track on the CD, she shared that she is drawn to “I’m Not With the Band” and “Oh Cowboy,” the latter of which she sang with country queen Miranda Lambert. “Miranda came and sang on it, which is so sweet of her, to take her time to do that,” she said. “Most of the songs are a little bit darker, a little bit sad, but I’m a sucker for sad songs.”

Regarding her future plans, Sebastian said, “I want to put together a small tour in the U.K. next year, after Miranda’s tour. Of course, I want to tour the U.S. again, but I want to go over to the U.K. They have been really good to me over there.”

Digital transformation of country music

On the impact of technology in the country music scene, Sebastian said, “I think there are great things about it: Music is more easily accessible, when you want to hear a song you can do that with the click of a button. I love the fact, but I miss actual physical CDs. I want album art to look at, to feel it, to read the liner notes, to see who wrote the songs, and I want to see what the artist says about the album. That is definitely missing. Streaming is a good thing, but we need to catch up on how to pay the writers and artists in that realm.”

Sebastian continued, “I love vinyl. It sounds different, you can hear more. It’s more real. I’m considering putting this album on vinyl. With the technology situation, people are wanting to go ahead again and have something that they can touch and feel with music again. Vinyl is the most tangible that you can get. It is the cool thing again.”
