Girl Ultra talks ‘Discreción,’ music inspirations, George Michael (Includes interview)

On “Discreción,” she said, “It comes from this particular nostalgia of lust and love in the ’80s, and mostly about secretive lovers making an agreement to keep feelings discreet.”

The video was directed by Mexican contemporary dance choreographer and visual artist Diego Mur (Nohbords). It shows off a very ’90s laidback choreography with angular frames showing off that cautious mingle between the dancers.

She noted that her songwriting and music are inspired by her everyday experiences, as well as her changing perspective about human relationships, her inner voice, and the concrete jungle.

Regarding her future plans, she said, “Exploring my creativity, getting to the very core of the music that I make, trying to reach the most organic representation.”

In addition, her debut LP, Nuevos Aires arrives on November 22.

On being an artist in the digital age, she said, “Personally, I romanticize the pre-digital era a lot, there was a place for fantasy, utopia, and most important of all; mysticism within the artist. I feel like all these icons I admire and grew up with saved their everyday lives as much as they could for themselves.”

“Now we all feel like sharing every second of it. I don’t know if we could really handle that big of a connection between us,” she added.

For young and aspiring musicians and bands, she encouraged them to “Do it yourselves.” “DIY, and use the bright side of the Internet. Information is out there for you 24/7. Use it wisely. Also, breathe. A lot.”

She listed Connan Mockasin and the late but great George Michael as her dream collaboration choices in music.

On the impact of streaming services on the music industry, she said, “They’re giving us a chance to have a presence out there, but also they’re helping the music industry to move fast forward not giving us time to really digest all the content.”

For her fans, she concluded about “Discreción,” “Picture yourself in an ’80s movie romantic dilemma between you and Patrick Swayze, looking in the eye across the room; dripping passion but you cannot say a word about it. Then, you get to say hi to each other. “
