article imageGabi Sklar discusses new single 'Liberteens' Special

By Markos Papadatos     Nov 10, 2017 in Music
Singer Gabi Sklar chatted with Digital Journal about her new single "Liberteens." She also chatted about the digital transformation of the music business.
On her single "Liberteens," she said, "It was extremely natural. I had all these stories from experiences in high school and thought “why not put them into a song?” I brought in the idea to the studio and talked to co-writer, Troi Irons, and we discussed what our teenage lives were and, for me, are like. Every lyric in the song is inspired off of a relationship or a party so it’s funny to see all my friends piece it together when they listen to 'Liberteens'."
Regarding her future plans, Sklar said, "I hope to have an EP then an album but a lot of time and patience goes into perfecting a project like that so in the meantime, I plan to release a few singles and then pursue that goal. I also want to tour and get in some performances— meet fans and make new ones."
When asked what inspires her music, she said, "People that are passionate about what they do. When I go into a studio session or see someone grinding or performing, that’s so touching to me. People that indulge in what they love and are not afraid to be different, that inspires me."
For hopefuls who wish to go into music professionally, she said, "My advice to anyone who wants to pursue any dream of theirs is to work your butt off. I was a little girl playing and writing music in my basement never thinking i’d ever be in a studio, so dreams really do come true when you put the work in. It’s time consuming, it’s a commitment and you have to make sacrifices but it’s worth it."
Digital transformation of music business
On the digital transformation of the music business, Sklar said, "I think social media has been a major outlet for artists whether it’s streaming music or releasing weekly covers on YouTube. I think it's allowed more people to be discovered and enables even more people to discover those people. It's pretty cool and kind of scary how fast the tech world has grown and developed but it’s allowed me to connect to so many people."
Regarding her use of technology in her daily routine, the young songstress said, "I love photography and keeping people updated through Instagram or Snapchat. It's weird because people may not know you personally but social media allows you to feel like you know someone. When you hear 'Liberteens,' you only discover so much about me through my music but there’s an entirely different, normal, teenage girl on the other side. I go to school, I hang out with friends, I make mistakes, people that only know me through my music don’t get to see that."
For her fans, she said, "Thank you for your support, and if you haven’t heard ‘Liberteens’ yet, check it out on Soundcloud, Apple Music, iTunes or Spotify, and if you want to see me as Marie Antoinette, go watch the music video on YouTube."
