article imageG Tom Mac talks 'Lost Boys' musical, soundtrack, Eminem, Grammy Special

By Markos Papadatos     Jul 27, 2017 in Music
G Tom Mac chatted with Digital Journal about winning a Grammy on an Eminem album, and his song "Cry Little Sister" for "The Lost Boys" musical.
His "Cry Little Sister," is the theme song for The Lost Boys. "I wrote 'Cry little sister' as a request from director Joel Schumacher, The Lost Boys film director, who had already been a fan of my music, as he was wanting a 'theme song' that would thread throughout the film. Mind you, he was still filming The Lost Boys, so for the first time ever, I wrote the song by having read the script he sent me. Only imagining what it would look like as a film, I then made a quick demo of my song and sent it to him."
G Tom Mac continued, "He got back to me five days later overwhelmed by what I created, and declared to me I had achieved beyond his expectations the theme song to his film. Come time that I viewed the film to place my song in the appropriate creative spots in the film, it looked nothing like what I imagined in my head when I was writing 'Cry Little Sister.' So much as I don't think I would have written that song, if I would have actually seen the film. Much of what I wrote lyrically was a way in which to encompass the overall feel of the films story with my own sense of the loner searching for family."
G Tom Mac will be performing in New Jersey and promoting the 30-year anniversary of The Lost Boys. "The venue QXT's in Newark was the first venue to approach us quite a while back to do a Lost Boy 30th anniversary on the actual July 29 date the film released in 1987. The promoters were so diligent and die-hard about it, I said let’s do it Lost Boys NJ style! Should be a blast! As I'll be playing songs from my upcoming musical," he said.
He shared that there is a Lost Boys musical in the works. "That's something I've been working on for some years in development. I wanted to give a back story to the characters and tell where they came from, and how they became Vampires, & their rebellious nature and youthful uniqueness, yet keeping in line with the humor that worked so well with the horror in the film. I've written all new songs that bring out a good deal of depth in the plays story, songs like 'Sleep All Day Party All Night,' 'Be One of Us,' 'Long Hot Summer' (Michael & Stars theme), and the ever -fun 'Death by Stereo'. The soundtrack will release late August to give the fans a good way to get the music in them in anticipation of the upcoming play," he said.
The soundtrack for the musical is coming along well. "We're 80 percent there, we are adding very short story voice over dialog by select actors and actresses that interweave between the songs, so to give a sense of the plays premise," he said.
G Tom Mac won a Grammy on Eminem's album. "I never thought I’d be attached to a genius of an artist such as 'Em' to take in a Grammy. The Recovery album was an incredible piece of work and very proud to have been part of it with 'You're never over'," he said.
When asked how he uses technology in his daily life, he responded, "I'm just like everyone really, I do however keep a balance with it, and do not let it take over my core of creative human self. But it's useful in not wasting time when needing to cut to the chase, searching out new artists and connecting with outlets of other creative entities other than music."
On the digital transformation of the music scene, he said, "It destroyed what was wrong with it, and created problems that have taken monetary away from a large sector of artists and songwriters that relied on that income. But more important it's opening many more doors to the future of expanding horizons of creative ways in which artists can and will make good livings from it in the future. I feel damn good about. Don't live in the past, as it will kill your soul."
