On the song selection approach for his new album, Foster said, “I set aside a little time when I take off for my tour, to write, and I get a collection of 15 to 20, and I get together with the band, and we share our opinions, and we narrow it down to 10 songs. We knocked it out of the park this time.”
Foster continued, “This is our seventh studio album, and I feel that we are an alternative to the pop-country that is going on right now. It is a mixture of outlaw country and rock and roll, with a traditional country mix in there. We are doing a pretty good job at it.”
While it was difficult to select a favorite song on the album, Foster shared that “This Evenin'” is a very special track, as well as the title cut.
On his plans for the future, Foster said, “To continue embracing this independent path. To continue to write and put out quality music. We do everything on our own, which allows us to do what we want.”
Foster listed country queen Miranda Lambert as his dream female duet choice in the genre. “I have always been a huge Miranda Lambert fan. She’s very unique voice, and she’s classic,” he said. “A duet with Miranda would be incredible.”
Digital transformation of country music
Regarding the impact of technology on the country music industry, Foster said, “It’s a Catch-22 if you are an artist. It is very easy to get your music out there, and it’s very easy to be shared. I don’t mind iTunes as much. I think it’s great. I got my name out there thanks to social media. It’s tough with streaming, and that’s a double-edged sword. With the streaming, you don’t get paid anywhere what you should get paid for those spins, but more people are discovering your music. If they love you enough, they will come to your concert and buy a T-shirt. That’s how it works for us.”
In his daily routine, Foster uses technology, especially social media, and it helps him in his recording process. “I can be laying in bed at night at 10 p.m. and think of a song, and I can just do a Voice Memo into my phone and write it up the next day,” he said.
