On the concept for his new album, SHIM said, “It came about through predominantly a lack of other options. When Sick Puppies split, I tried to work with a few other producers and writers, and it just wasn’t coming together. It was really hard and time-consuming to find the right people that were on the same wavelength as me. I knew I had some success with Sick Puppies, so I decided to put a record out so that people don’t forget about me. That’s how the solo record was formed.”
Regarding his plans for the future, SHIM said, “Hitting the road as soon as I can. I want to play Sick Puppies songs and all of the new songs. Being an independent artist, you have more creative freedom as opposed to being on a major label.”
Digital transformation of the music business
On the impact of technology on the music business, SHIM said, “Technology has changed everything. You can ask the same question to a bunch of bands, and they will all give you a similar answer, the only difference will be if they are making money off it or not. A band that gets millions and millions of streams on Spotify will tell you that Spotify is amazing. A newer artist might put out a song and get 10,000 streams out of it. It all depends. Spotify adds 40,000 songs a week and the competition is fierce. The labels are running the majority of that traffic.”
SHIM continued, “As far as music is concerned, Spotify is fantastic since I can check out something on YouTube and then go to Spotify and find that band’s whole catalog of music and listen to it.”
Regarding his use of technology in his daily routine, SHIM said, “I use it as much as I can. I make my music and I make my videos, and I use social media to promote it to the fans.”
SHIM also uses his iPhone to record his music ideas, and he makes his album on his laptop.
