On September 12, American Idol alum and singer-songwriter David Archuleta chatted with Digital Journal about his upcoming Christmas album, new song, and Christmas tour. Archuleta also praised fellow Idol alum David Cook.
On his holiday single "Christmas Every Day," Archuleta said, "I pushed myself and decided to write a fun, happy, Christmas song because I love happy Christmas songs," he admitted. "I worked with producer and songwriter Cason Cooley and Dave Barnes. I am really happy with how it turned out."
Archuleta is going on tour this November to support his upcoming Christmas album. His holiday tour will kick off on November 26 at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, California, and it will wrap up on December 21 in Richfield, Utah at the Sevier Valley Arena.
On Monday, December 17, Archuleta will be playing a headlining show at the Highline Ballroom in New York. "Christmas shows are my favorite because I feel that it's music that I can really sing. I can pour my heart and soul into these Christmas melodies, and you feel the words, which are powerful too. I will have the fun Christmas songs and I am excited to sing 'Christmas Every Day' live. I like to tell stories as well," he said. "The show will be a little mix of singing the Christmas songs and telling some stories."
His radio pop hit "Crush" is still played on the airwaves to this day. "It is funny and weird when it comes on, especially for radio personalities to still have it on their rotation after all these years," he said. "It makes me happy that the song still makes people happy too."
Archuleta listed Tori Kelly and Jordin Sparks as his dream female duet choices in music. "I just love Tori's voice, and I just love everything about her. She has this gentle but powerful soul, and a really great spirit. Her voice is killer," he said. "I would love to sing with Jordin Sparks too. I would love to record something with Jordin."
Also, his American Idol fellow musician David Cook just finished his Broadway run in Kinky Boots. "I was bummed that I didn't see him in the Broadway show, but we did get together and we had dinner. We were able to catch up again, and he is really good about that. David is a good guy," Archuleta said.
He defined the word success as "consistency," "working hard" and "being grateful for the results." "It's about being true, feeling good about what you put in, and grateful for what you receive," he said.
Digital transformation of the music industry
On the impact of technology on the music business, Archuleta said, "We have had to adjust to it. Musicians and artists used to make a living by selling their albums. Now, with subscriptions, people don't buy it as much, so we have had to adapt, in order to keep making a living. Touring is how I recover. Technology makes music accessible to so many more people. The things people listen to these days is so diverse. Technology is cool in that regard."
Regarding his use of technology in his daily routine, Archuleta said, "I use Spotify to listen to songs and get familiar with them, and if I really like them I buy them on iTunes, so that I can listen to them on the airplane."
"Christmas Every Day" is available on Spotify. "I hope the fans like it. I worked really hard on it this year, and I am so excited. Christmas music is my favorite music and I hope the fans feel inspired and enjoy it," he said. "I can't wait to see everyone on tour."
