Cherie Currie talks ‘Blvds of Splendor,’ Matt Sorum, Suzi Quatro (Includes interview)

Blvds of Splendor will be released on April 28 via Blackheart Records, and it was produced by iconic drummer Matt Sorum (formerly of Guns N’ Roses). She described the song selection process for the album as a collective, family effort. “That was just all of us,” she said. “We all brought ideas and we did a lot of writing. Kenny Laguna even brought some songs on board as well. It was a joint venture song-wise.”

With “Queens of Noise,” they pay homage to the late but great Runaways drummer Sandy West. “Had our dear Sandy survived she would have been playing on that song. Sandy was so spectacular. She was such a wonderful friend and an extraordinary drummer. With Matt Sorum paying homage to her that way really meant a lot, she said.

On her personal favorite song on the album, Currie responded, “I really like ‘The Air That I Breathe’ since that was a dream come true for me, and I love doing the title track ‘Blvds of Splendor’ with Billy Corgan. There are so many memories on this record.”

The album features such special guest collaborators as Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, Slash and Duff from Guns N’ Roses, as well as Juliette Lewis, Brody Dalle, The Veronicas and drummer Matt Sorum. “Billy is a giving, generous, and brilliant writer. He is truly brilliant,” she said.

She noted that when Slash had done an interview in the past, he mentioned Currie as one of his Top 10 favorite collaborators. “That stunned me. ‘Mr. X’ was not an easy song to sing,” she admitted. “Slash was really happy with my vocal.”

On working with Matt Sorum as a producer, she said with a sweet laugh, “Matt’s tough.” “Matt is very driven and you can certainly hear that on this record. He’s a true musician. I learned a lot from Matt. He did a great job,” she said. “This record took 10 years but it was worth the wait for me. I am listening to the record today and I am blown away with how good it sounds.”

A proud moment for Currie included presenting Suzi Quatro with the “Icon Award” at the 2020 She Rocks Awards this past January as part of NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants). “That was a moment I will never forget and the moment she emailed me to do the honors for her. My heart was pounding out of my chest,” she said.

Blvds of Splendor is available for pre-order by clicking here. “This album is worth the 10-year wait. I guarantee it,” she told her fans.
