Chatting with Janet Devlin: ‘Outernet Song’ and ‘My Opium’ tour (Includes interview)

Regarding her single “Outernet Song,” Devlin said, “Unlike most of the songs I write, it wasn’t written in a day. I started writing this song when I was 19 on a trip back home to Gortin. It was never really intended to be a song, it was just four chords that I was lopping around on the ukulele. I’d added some lyrics that were once a poem and wrote the first two verses. Over the space of the next few years I just kept adding bits here and there. It wasn’t until three months ago that I created a ‘chorus’ and then I decided to release it.”

Her song has garnered positive reactions and feedback from her fans and peers on social media. “The reaction has been phenomenal!” she exclaimed. “I never expected such an amazing response! The fans seem to be really loving it. Especially since they heard the poem two years ago on my app, so they got to watch it grow. Considering it’s a song about social media, its actually gone down really well online. It’s been great to see a lot of re-engagement from people, so much so that it went to No. 7 in the physical charts.”

Filming the music video for “Outernet Song” was a great deal of fun for the Irish songstress. “We filmed the whole thing in one day so it was exhausting. I created the concept for the video and did all the styling myself, so it was really rewarding to watch it all come together. I think the most difficult part was trying to be 80’s Janet, as she had to do an entire workout routine for an hour. I don’t exercise so I was pretty tired. But all in all it was amazing as I worked with the guys from Silvertip Films, who I’d worked with before,” she said.

She will be headlining her “My Opium” tour this year, which will be her third headlining tour in the U.K. “I’ll be playing songs from my catalog and new songs that people have never heard before so I’m super excited to hear what people think of them. I’ll be hitting the road with my band so it should be a pretty fun little adventure around the U.K. I’m so exited to hit the outernet say personally say to my fans for all their support this year,” she said.

On her plans for the future, Devlin said, “I will continue to write and record new music. I’ve been working on my second album called Holy Water so it’s been great to be writing all the time. I have been very particular about this record as it’s a conceptual one. So the writing process has been very intense and focused but very rewarding.”
