On May 15, she will be performing at Cielo in New York. “I’m actually preparing for it as we speak,” she said, with a sweet laugh. “I’m a very vibey person, so I go with the vibe of the crowd and the room. It will be funky and it will consist of remixes of ‘Places.’ There will be a cool diversity of music tonight.”
Her smash single “Places,” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Dance charts, which marks her second consecutive single to accomplish this milestone. “That was very shocking and something I was hoping for, but by no means expected. It’s a huge honor for me to have that,” she said.
Ghali’s “Places” music video features Teen Wolf’s Ryan Kelley, as well as singer and actress Raquel Castro. “That was actually a really challenging video for me, because up until that point all of the videos I ever did were shot in Greece. This is really my first video that I did in New York. It’s a completely new group of production people, but it was an incredible experience and we had a lot of fun,” she said. “Ryan is an incredible actor and a really great person. He is one of the nicest people I’ve ever met.”
On her Greek heritage, she said, “I’m half Greek. My mom is Greek and I grew up in Athens. I was there until I age of 18, where I graduated high school. Then, I went to the U.K. and did a Bachelor’s degree in Music Composition. After my Bachelor’s, I came to New York and did my Master’s degree in Music Composition.”
Ghali continued, “The Greek market is very important to me, and I still go to Greece for touring and televised events.”
Her future plans include working on her next singles, as well as a summer tour in Greece. “I’m headlining a festival in Greece on June 17, which is going to be a lot of fun. I’m working on the concept right now. I like combining the art, and my set will involve a story. I’m very excited about that one,” she said. “You’re going to hear a lot of new music from me, which is always very exciting.”
