Catching up with Jesse Ruben: ‘We Can’ and ‘Today’ show debut (Includes interview)

On his national television debut on Today, Ruben said, “That was really exciting and fun. I didn’t really know what to expect. I had to get there at 6 a.m. in the morning for sound-check and my whole family came in. That was really cool to be able to share that experience with them.”

Ruben continued, “As someone who writes songs, it’s really amazing when people admire what you do, and it’s even more special when somebody with a big platform like that likes your work. I’m really grateful to Hoda Kotb. The response was incredible. I heard back from everybody that I’ve ever met in my life. The song and the performance gave people something to look forward to, and a little bit of hopefulness in a time when there is so many craziness happening in the world.”

Last year, his song “This Is Why I Need You” garnered a rave review from Digital Journal, where it was subsequently named “Best Acoustic Song of 2016.” “That is a really special song for me. It came from a really dark and intense place, and it’s special for a lot of other people,” he said.
