Catching up with Tigerlily: New York City Marathon, new music (Includes interview)

On Nov. 6, DJ Tigerlily will be running the New York City Marathon. “I’m running the NYC marathon for an Australian based charity called Lifeline this weekend. I actually have no idea what to expect as I’ve never run a marathon before. I hear it’s the best marathon to run in the world, finishing in Central Park, with a huge cheering crowd the whole way. I’m so nervous and so excited at the same time. I come from a family of elite athletes, however that athletic gene somehow seemed to have skipped me. My father and uncle have given me their best marathon tips, so we shall see how it goes.”

She continued, “Lifeline is an Australian charity that focuses on the prevention of suicide and the development of positive mental health. Over the past 10 years I’ve struggled with my own mental health battles; from beating anorexia as a teen, to dealing with severe anxiety attacks, and now, trying to manage that ongoing battle with stress and self-concept. Every day I see how the effects of poor mental health, depression, anxiety and low self-esteem affect the youth of our country. I speak to young people far too often that verbalize that they feel like they have no one to talk to about their mental health problems, or that they are too afraid to speak out. I want to change this, and really strive to create an awareness about the services that Lifeline provide, and dissolve any negative stigma which may be associated with reaching out for help from others.”

On her future plans, she said, “Hopefully more running for charity, if I don’t die in the process of running this marathon, but in general, 2017 is going to be such a beautiful year, I’m very excited. 2016 has been hard, full of mistakes, learning lessons, and crazy travel. Next year, I am really focusing on my health, my music, and passion projects that aren’t just DJing – this may be working more closely with charities, developing my radio profile, or focusing on travel.”

Each day, she is motivated from a variety of places. “My sisters are a huge motivation for me. They are so talented and beautiful. Not to mention the internal desire to live the most fulfilled life and be the best possible human. I follow some beautiful and empowering women on Instagram which always makes me feel motivated when I view their profiles. I think the trick is finding out how to motivate yourself in the most efficient way, whether that is writing lists, listening to a morning mantra, or doing a daily visualisation — find what works and stick to it.”

Her North American tour last month was super crazy and a lot of fun. “I played some really wicked shows to some awesome crowds and mixed it up with a little bit of personal travel too — a week in Hawaii! I’m very much looking forward to coming back to the USA next summer,” she said.

“Invisible Children” is her smash collaboration with KSHMR. “I feel very lucky to have been able to collaborate with KSHMR — he is incredibly talented. I sent him an idea for the tune, and much to my surprise he liked it! He finished it off and gave it the KSHMR touch and the rest is history. To have it as the No. 1 tune overall on Beatport for such a long time was a huge success and achievement for me. It’s crazy how a little idea in your bedroom studio can turn into something that people all around the world love and play,” she said.

She revealed that she would love to travel to New York City to perform again. “Stay posted in 2017,” she hinted. “New York City is my favorite city to travel to in the world.”

For her fans, Tigerlily concluded, “Thank you for supporting me through highs and lows, through not only my musical journey, but also my life journey! Keep loving and learning and supporting one and other.”
