article imageCaroline Romano talks 'Babysit,' Shawn Mendes and digital age Special

By Markos Papadatos     Nov 4, 2019 in Music
Rising pop artist Caroline Romano chatted with Digital Journal about her new single "Babysit," and her experience opening for pop hitmaker Shawn Mendes.
"'Babysit' was one of those songs that came about from just talking to my friends about past relationships," she said. "I think we all know people who always seem to be getting into trouble, or never really seem to grow up. Whether it's a friend or a partner, it can be exhausting to feel like you have to almost be 'babysitting' them all the time. I loved that analogy the moment I heard it, and I knew it would make for a great song."
On her future plans, she said, "My plans for the future include continuing to write new music and improve overall as an artist. I never want to put limits on what my future in music can be, so I always say I plan on taking this as far and wide as it can go. I just want to keep growing and learning, and I hope to continue making fans who are willing to grow along with me. The future is so unexpected, but I’m so excited to see what it holds. Whether that's playing stadium tours or writing songs in my bedroom, I know I'll be happy as long as I'm making music."
Regarding her musical inspirations, she said, "Anything and everything inspires the music I write. It can be whatever I'm feeling at the moment, another artist, a guy walking down the street with his hands in his pockets, or the weather. What I love about songwriting is that it's a different experience every time. I keep finding new and different ways to write music as new things continue to inspire me each and every day. I'd say this is true of a lot of songwriters."
On being an artist in this digital age, she said, "There are definitely pros and cons to being an artist in this current age of social media and streaming. For one, it’s so much easier to make music and put it out there. Nothing is closed off anymore, and I can promote my music with a single post on Instagram."
"On the other hand, I think it's really difficult to be an artist in this digital age. Everything is oversaturated, and it's so easy to get lost in the sea of endless content. Social media also makes it a lot harder to stand out as an artist or creator, as you won't get much attention if you don't have a certain number of followers," she said.
Romano had the good fortune to open for pop star Shawn Mendes. "Any time you get to open for someone you admire is a really special moment. He is such a hardworking, talented artist, and that experience gave me an up-close look at where hard work and dedication can get you. It was a really cool way to sort of begin my music career, and I'll be forever thankful for that experience," she elaborated.
She listed the following male artists as her dream collaboration choices: Ed Sheeran, YUNGBLUD, or Charlie Puth. "They are some of my favorite male artists, and they each have an incredibly unique, distinguishable sound. An opportunity to record with any of them would be mind-blowing," she said.
For her fans, she concluded about "Babysit," "I just hope that people can relate to 'Babysit.' I think it's such a relatable topic, especially for young people. I think most of us can think of someone they wish wasn’t quite so immature. 'Babysit' is a really fun, youthful song, and I hope it’s something fans can really enjoy."
"Babysit" is available on Apple Music and on Spotify.
