Cam opens up about her success in country music, the color yellow (Includes interview)

A California-born singer-songwriter, Cam earned her first platinum record and first No. 1 country single with “Burning House,” which subsequently garnered her a 2016 Grammy nomination for “Best Country Solo Performance.” “That felt amazing,” she said. “It made us feel welcome into the country music community, even though ‘Burning House’ was not really the easiest song to play on the radio. It just connected with so many people, and being a different song, made it feel more enjoyable.”

In addition, thanks to the success of “Burning House,” she was up for six Academy of Country Music (ACM) awards, where she was the most-nominated female artist at this year’s ACM ceremony; moreover, Billboard ranked “Burning House” as the best performance of that evening. “That was pretty crazy,” she admitted. “To sing ‘Burning House,’ and at the end of it, I had a seven-minute dress change, where I ran really quick and did the change during the commercial break. To have everybody stand up and clap was really, really cool.”

Since July of 2015, Cam was the sole country female singer to achieve more than one million downloads and her breakthrough single “Burning House” and debut album Untamed, earned rave reviews from music critics. The CD was released on Arista Nashville/RCA Records, on December 11, 2015, and it debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top Country Albums charts, with the year’s best first-week album sales by a debut country artist. Producers Jeff Bhasker and Tyler Johnson co-produced the project, while Cam co-wrote all of the 11 tracks. “We actually wrote all those songs over the past four or five years, and then, we had a Kickstarter campaign to help fund making the album on our own, independently, cause I was not signed to a label yet. Jeff Bhasker, our executive producer, helped us narrow the song choices down and it felt right,” she said.

Cam listed the song “Village” as her personal favorite tune from Untamed, especially since it is very personal to her.

She revealed that she is out on the road touring with Dierks Bentley on his “Somewhere On A Beach” Tour, and earlier this year, she was the special musical guest of Brad Paisley on his “Crushin’ It” Tour. “We are hoping to do some cool new shows in the fall, and put out some more music, and stay true to who we are,” she hinted.

Her latest radio single, “Mayday,” has earned the songstress critical acclaim, and rightfully so. Digital Journal declared it as “the best female country single of 2016.” In her “Mayday” music video, directed by Daniel Carberry, she takes on an Amelia Earhart-inspired role. “I love making music videos,” she said.

For aspiring country songwriters and singers, she said, “Remember, it’s a really long game. It’s going to take a very long time, but still be excited. Learn all the aspects of your business, since you need to be a boss of everything that you are doing. Remember, you are fully capable of doing it.”

She listed country star Eric Church as her dream male collaboration choice, and she shared that she will be opening for him soon at Red Rocks in Denver. Cam defined the word success as “being happy,” “sleeping well at night,” and “having good people around you.”

Being from California, her favorite color is yellow, and she uses it in her wardrobe often. “I come from California, and that’s my little sunshine, that I take with me everywhere I go. It’s nice to have that touchstone that I get to keep with me. People seem to be nicer to me in yellow actually. It’s a very friendly color,” she said. “It sets the vibe of what I’m doing really well, and it gets to be my good luck charm.”
