Brandon Lay talks new single ‘Speakers, Bleachers and Preachers’ (Includes interview)

Lay co-wrote “Speakers, Bleachers and Preachers” with such country songwriters as Luke Laird and Shane McAnally. “I wrote the song a little over a year ago with Luke Laird and Shane McAnally. I had a day with Luke and we were writing in his studio. I had that line [speakers, bleachers and preachers] in my head, and I wasn’t sure if it was a title or not. We came up with the hook and we wrote a lot of it that day. The next week, we had a co-write with Shane McAnally, and he helped us finish it,” Lay explained.

Future plans

For the rest of this summer, Lay shared that he will be playing a few shows with country group Old Dominion, and he will be playing with Kenny Chesney on Saturday night. “We’ve been on a promo tour this summer, visiting a lot of radio stations, and the response has been very rewarding,” he said. Lay also gave a special shout-out to Mike Allan, the assistant program director of NASH FM 94.7, the hit country radio station in New York.

Lay listed country queen Reba McEntire as his dream female duet choice in music. “Reba is classic,” he admitted.

Digital transformation of country music

On the impact of technology in the music scene, he said, “People have mixed feelings about how technology is influencing the songwriting process specifically, but I’m all for it. I think all the home studios in the digital age have come such a long way. We have so many tools at our disposal, and back in the day, a lot of people did not have those tools. I’m all for technology. Whatever it takes to make the best song or the best sounds, when it comes from a computer or on acoustic guitar in the room, it’s important to use both. I think technology has pushed songwriting forward, because there is so much more inspiration on our fingertips.”

When asked how he uses technology on a daily basis, he said, “I have a little studio set-up in my home, where I can do vocals, and track them. For me, it’s getting on a different instrument. I’ve written so many years in a room with an acoustic guitar, and I love going to different instruments to get new inspirations and to create fresh sounds.”

Success

Lay defined the word success as “being able to do music for a living.” “When I moved up here to Nashville, I would pray to God to make a living as a songwriter in country music. I’m happy to have a record deal and to have a chance to make a record. I’ve done a lot of what I always wanted to do. I love making fans and making music. That’s success to me,” he said.

His single, released on EMI Nashville, is available on iTunes.
