Bluegrass star Sierra Hull set to wow U.K. audiences once more (Includes interview)

Singer/songwriter and mandolin virtuoso Sierra Hull is set to tour the United Kingdom in support of her third album, Weighted Mind, released last year on Rounder Records – following a short visit last year.

Something of a child prodigy, Sierra made her debut on the Grand Ole Opry at the age of eleven, signing with Rounder Records two years later. Her first album for the label was Secrets in 2008. This was followed three years later by Daybreak.

The artist’s most accomplished work to date, Weighted Mind consists largely of mandolin, bass and vocals. It was produced by Béla Fleck and features Alison Krauss – an artist to whom Sierra has often been compared – on harmony vocals.

It seems Sierra has been rather active of late, and not just musically. “It’s been a very busy season both in life and music,” she says. “I recently got married and bought a house in Nashville, in addition to touring a bunch here in the States.”

Commenting on her upcoming visit to our shores, she continues: “This will be my first official UK tour as a solo artist. I had the opportunity to do a unique tour with my friend and hero Ron Block last summer.

“We don’t get the chance to play together too often, so that was so much fun playing a wide catalogue of music. This time, I wanted to return to the UK and bring bassist Ethan Jodziewicz, who tours with me regularly.

“I am really excited to share a lot of the music from my Weighted Mind album that he was a big part of. It will be his first trip to the UK, so I imagine we will be as touristy as time will allow!”

How are British audiences different from American ones? “From what little experience I have, the UK audiences are absolutely wonderful and have just the right amount of presence during a show,” replies Sierra.

“I love an audience that can be fun and boisterous, but also one that knows how to really listen and take in the lyrics to a song. From my previous experience with Ron, the audiences there seemed very open and receptive to everything we played.”

Krauss and Fleck are just two of the top names that Sierra has collaborated with during her long and successful career – and Abigail Washburn and Rhiannon Giddens also appear on her latest album.

“There are plenty of my heroes that I think would be amazing to work with someday in some capacity,” she notes, reflecting on possible future musical pairings. “Paul Simon, Dolly Parton, Sara Bareilles, Bonnie Raitt, to name a few.”

Asked about what’s on the agenda for the rest of the year and beyond, Sierra concludes: “I have lots of touring ahead for the rest of the year. I’m also trying to make sure and leave time in my schedule for planning a new album.”

Sierra Hull’s UK tour begins at Bush Hall in London on Monday, June 26.
