This will mark the venue’s reopening after undergoing a major renovation. On August 4, 2015, Billy Joel fans packed the venue for its final show, as Joel performed a three-hour set of his classic hits.
A native of Long Island, Joel will play his 33rd career show at Nassau Coliseum. He sold out the venue nine times in 1998, which was a record for the most sellout shows in one year. As a result of that milestone, a banner continues to hang in the rafters.
Governor Andrew Cuomo praised Joel for being both an “international icon,” as well as a “New York treasure.” Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano confirmed that there is no better performer that is suited for this re-opening.
Throughout his decorated career in the music industry, Joel has sold 150 million albums, and he is the sixth best-selling recording artist of all time. He has also won six Grammy awards, which include the “Grammy Legend Award.” Joel is a Kennedy Center honoree, as well as a member of the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame.
