On his new single “Thankful For,” Sanders said, “I had the idea one morning. I was walking around my house making breakfast, and I was humming this little melody and singing this idea in my song. I had forgotten about it for six months. We wrote about a song about the things we are thankful for in about three hours. It was really cool writing something with a positive message.”
Sanders has written chart-topping singles for such country artists as Cole Swindell (“Ain’t Worth The Whiskey”) and Dustin Lynch (“Hell Of a Night”) and he had cuts for Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, and Scotty McCreery. “Both of those guys are huge influences of mine. They are really good friends. Me and Cole hang out and watch football and me and Dustin go out and hunt. They are probably my two best friends in Nashville,” he said.
On his future plans, he said, “It feels so good to release a song that is 150 percent me. We are going to release new music at the beginning of next year, and we will be out on the road.”
A native of North Florida and up-and-coming country singer-songwriter, Sanders has already independently sold over 70,000 singles and racked up over 32 million streams on Spotify. He released his self-penned single “Thankful For,” on November 3, which is his first single from his upcoming self-titled project, which is slated for release in early 2018.
Digital transformation of country music
On the impact of technology in country music, he said, “It’s crazy. I have been in Nashville for eight years and it has changed so much in that time. Music is always changing and evolving through streaming and the Internet. I look at music as a game that’s changing, you need to stay on top of those rules, and if you don’t like the rules, don’t play the game. You need to be conscious of that.”
Sanders continued, “Vinyl has become a cool throwback thing. Trends happen and it’s almost cool again to be country. The new generation never got to experience what vinyl was, and all these things that we look at as vintage country. I like it, and I support it all.”
He listed Carly Pearce as his dream female duet choice in country. “I’m a big fan of hers. Carly is a girl I’ve seen in Nashville for a long time and she’s worked very hard. A lot of people thought she was never going to make it, and finally she does. Carly stuck it out, and I applaud her faithfulness to her dream. She stayed true to who she is and her new record is amazing. I love seeing her hard work paying off,” he said.
When asked what he is most thankful for this Thanksgiving holiday, he said, “The message of my song is being thankful. My life is overflowing right now. A few years ago, I went through a break-up and my music career had fallen a little bit, but now it’s all come full circle. My family is here in Nashville with me, and Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, because I get to see my family. When I stand on stage and sing that song, I mean every word of it.”
“Thankful For” is available on iTunes.
