Santa Monica - Just how independent are The Independent Spirit Awards? This year, the winners reflect as much mainstream as the Oscars will be March 2. Or so it seems.
The winner's list is impressive and the show could be a preview of what to expect come Sunday. The top prize went to "12 Years a Slave." Jennifer Lawrence lost out to Lupito Nyong'o in the supporting actress category while the others fell in line.
Held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, Calif., the Indie Spirit Awards have become the place to be the day before Hollywood's biggest night, The Oscars.
In all, "12 Years a Slave" wins five awards and wins the day.
It was Jared Leto and his win in the supporting actor category that launched the day. his acceptance speech was buzzed about as well. He thanked a long list and even the CIA but meant the CAA (agent firm). He also thanked, "my future ex-wife — Lupita, I’m thinking of you.” In reference to the rumor or real item that he is with Nyong'o, a winner as well.
Ryan Coogler got a standing ovation when he won for best first feature for the poignant "Fruitvale Station."
The show will air later on IFC. Patton Oswalt was host and he quipped that Bruce Dern is here to see the ocean for the last time.
