‘Supernatural’ star Mark Pellegrino talks ‘The Guardian Project’ (Includes interview)

“The Guardian Project” is a multi-tiered attack on the epidemic problems of public bullying and the spreading of libelous narratives on social media. The Kickstarter campaign officially launched on October 27, 2020, in an effort to raise money to help create the reality docuseries that not only expose online bullying and libel but offers community solutions and reformative justice for the victims. “We have some deals going for folks that are going to match funds so I hope that fund-matching will get us to our goal in time,” he added. “Our project is comprehensive enough to attack this epidemic problem in a real practical and ethical way. That is going to make the world a better place.”

On joining forces with Andrew Rossow, he said, “Andrew is the perfect partner. We are from two different dimensions and universes but we somehow meld together perfectly. My weaknesses are his strengths and vice versa. We have become fast friends in the last few months.”

“The Guardian Project” deals with libel and slander, and the narratives it produces. These narratives ultimately go viral and destroy people’s reputations; moreover, it protects victims and holds aggressors accountable, and it seeks redress for victims and it seeks to provide victims with the ability to confront their aggressors.

As an actor, Pellegrino is known for his roles as Lucifer in Supernatural, Paul Bennett in Dexter, Jacob in Lost, and Deputy Bill Standall in 13 Reasons Why.

On being an actor in the digital age, Pellegrino said, “It’s great. I will take anything that gets the information and the narratives to people easier. Now, you can watch things from the convenience of your own homes. Although the virtual world is taking over, I think it’s progress.”

Each day, he shared that he is motivated by justice, goodness, production, productiveness, and virtue. “Bring reason into the world, and that motivates me to go from one day into the next,” he said.

When asked about his career-defining moments, he said, “Dexter and Lost were the first ones that put me on the map, and then, Supernatural, has had an amazing impact on my life. It has such a strong, passionate, and big fan-base all over the world. Also, getting out and interacting with fans has helped me define my outlook on life and my approach to the world. I owe the Supernatural fandom a huge shoutout for helping me grow as a man.”

He opened up about Supernatural coming to a close. “Right now, it’s just sad for me because it feels like an institution is going away and I still haven’t wrapped my mind around that yet. I know abstractly that nothing is forever, we live in a finite universe that never lasts.”

“Playing Lucifer was really fun,” he admitted. “The character changed over the course of the years. There was a great deal of darkness but it was seasoned with sarcasm and play that was subtle. Then, he became more ambitious, grandiose, more fun-loving and broad comedically, and a little less subtle. It was fun playing all of those changes, and they gave me the latitude to do what I wanted.”

For young and aspiring actors, Pellegrino said, “Treat acting like a job, like it’s your profession and your calling. Work at it every single day. I would tell aspiring actors to practice. There is a habit of virtue that they can build up and then, luck will probably work on their side.”

He listed Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman as his dream acting partners. “Denzel is one of my favorite actors of all time,” he said. “I love both of those guys, they are both virtuosos.”

“Also, I’ve always wanted to work with Meryl Streep,” he said. “She was in a very important movie for me, One True Thing, where she plays a housewife who gets sick. I saw it right after my mother passed away, and it actually had such an impact on me. Meryl’s character had cancer, which my mom had at the time, and her performance was so flawless. It’s a really beautiful story, and a genius performance. I would love to work with her.

Regarding the title of the current chapter of his life, he said, “Muddling Through.” “I’ve actually been very creative in this downtime than I have been in a long time. Also, making lemonade out of lemons.”

He shared that he loves working with master photographer Bjoern Komerrell. “I love Bjoern. It has been a while but he’s my favorite guy. I love going to him. He’s awesome. He throws you into the mix and you need to go with the flow,” he said.

If he were to do any track and field event, he revealed that he would do the javelin throw. “It has roots in history and it’s practical. You need a good javelin thrower for the zombie apocalypse,” he said.

Pellegrino defined success as “a spiritual word.” “Success means that you are living according to your values whether or not the rest of the world buys that,” he concluded.
