Review: ‘The Shelter’ is a compelling horror film starring Michael Pare (Includes first-hand account)

This film is rich in symbolism, mystery, suspense and biblical references. Pare portrays Thomas, a homeless man and widower who finds his “shelter” in an abandoned house, with the lights on, and an open front door. He soon discovers that he is not alone; moreover, this haunted house will not allow him to leave, especially since all of the doors are locked, and the same holds true for the windows. Unlike the definition of the true word “shelter,” fate is what brought Thomas to this house, and he is left with some crucial decisions to make for a chance of survival. “There once was a man who had it all,” he said, in one of the scenes, as he is reminiscing about the past, as he took a sip of alcohol. “And then, he lost it all. The end.”

Without giving too much away, this is one horror film that everybody should see. They will not be disappointed.

The Verdict

Overall, The Shelter is a great horror movie that is recommended for all moviegoers. Michael Pare is transformative in the role, and he builds his character from within. Pare commands the screen for the entire duration of the film. John Fallon did a brilliant job writing the script, as well as directing and producing the movie. It garners an A rating.

The Shelter was released in theaters and in digital formats on November 4, and it is expected to be out on DVD on January 3 from Uncork’d Entertainment.

Lead actor Michael Pare chatted with Digital Journal about The Shelter.
