Interview: Actor Johnny Greenlaw discusses new film ‘Mommy’s Box’ (Includes interview)

The feature film has been praised by The Los Angeles Times as one of the “most anticipated movies of the season.” It encompasses elements of drama, wit and music. “That’s excellent,” he said. “I was thrilled to see that. It was a great surprise.”

In the film, Greenlaw portrays Nick, a music producer in New York City, who is dealing with his own demons and chemical dependency as he receives the news of his mentally unstable mother’s death. When he returns home to Long Island for the wake, many family secrets are revealed. “I am born and raised on Long Island,” he said. “About three years ago, I started writing a story about a mother and her two sons and that’s how it started. I always pitch my ideas to people any chance I get, and I always draw from real things in my life.”

What is best about this film is that Greenlaw has left the idea of “mommy’s box” open to interpretation.

Regarding the musical score in the film, Greenlaw said, “This being a film that was heavily reliant on music, it was a key component in the film. The lyrics were right on point, and relatable, and exactly what I needed for the film. The songs were perfectly in the film.”

He added, “The Bare Bones Theater, based in Northport, Long Island, was a tremendous help to the film. They have some of the best Long Island based actors, and we used many of them for the film, and they are still putting on great shows.”

Mommy’s Box will be released September 30 at Arena Cinema Hollywood and on VOD (Video on Demand). It features an all-star cast of actors including Bill Sorvino, Carly Brooke, Joe D’Onofrio, David Harris, Gina Scarda, Kelly Karavites, Jen Dorcic, John Dorcic, Tom Rizzuto and Aimee Berlin, among others.

In mid-October, it will be screening in theaters on Long Island, New York.
