Hillary Clinton is funny on ‘Between Two Ferns’ with Galifianakis

Hillary and Zac: Comedy team

Surely the Democratic party’s nominee knew that guesting on Galifianakis’ loopy web show Between Two Ferns is not for the faint of heart. Perhaps she and her campaign thought if she could handle the quirky Galifianakis, of Hangover movies fame, she will more easily handle Donald Trump in their debate Monday night.

They might be right. Clinton sharpened her repartee and showed she is not faint of heart, deadpaning throughout the show, unfazed by her host and his antics. Her reactions, sometimes her lack of them, got her as many laughs as Galifianakis.

Galifianakis did not shy from jokes that bordered on crudity or from bringing up Clinton hot-button issues. He pointedly asked if the best way to get a hold of her was by email and said she wanted to take away everyone’s guns (she doesn’t). Her answer to that was her best moment: “I really regret doing this show,” she deadpanned.

Her bearded host even made an allusion to the Trump remark about how he would have a thing for one of his own daughters, if only she wasn’t his daughter.

“Does Ivanka ever call Chelsea?,” he asked after noting Clinton’s daughter and Trump’s are friends. “You know, to talk about boys that might have crushes on her? You know, like her dad?”

We shall not give anymore away here but will note that the opening graphic indicated that nothing would be sacred in the 5 minute talk; it read ‘Hillary Clinton: had pneumonia.’

Clinton vs. Trump debates

As of Saturday morning Clinton’s appearance on Between Two Ferns had already garnered 7 million hits. Barack Obama was on the show two years ago to plug health-care for young Americans; his episode now has 17 million viewers.

After taping the show, Clinton returned to the campaign trail and to preparing for the first of three presidential debates on Monday at Hofstra University in Hemstead, New York.

That debate will be moderated by NBC News anchor Lester Holt. For the second debate on October 9 at Washington University in St. Louis the moderators will be CNN’s Anderson Cooper and Martha Raddatz of ABC News.

The moderator for the final debate on October 19 at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas is Chris Wallace of Fox News. There will be one vice-president debate.

Galifianakis wasn’t asked to moderate any of the debates. Too bad.
