Chatting with Ruth-Ann Thorn: Gallerist and documentary producer (Includes interview)

On the success of her docu-series Art of the City, she said, “It is a passion for me to bring artists to the forefront of the viewer. I feel like it has a long way to go but it’s a great start.”

She is also the visionary behind N8IV. “I’ve always been an entrepreneur and when I see there’s something missing in the market I can’t help myself but want to create a space for it. In this endeavor, it’s bringing the plants and recipes for healing skin from my 14,000 years documented native heritage to market,” she said.

“The mission is two-fold: to bring the medicinal healing properties from Tribal recipes for people to enjoy and use along with building awareness about the needs in Indian country specifically the Missing indigenous women crisis,” she added.

She also opened up about the reality show “Billion Dollar Beauty Brand.” “I am very excited to have been chosen as a contestant on a brand new reality show. The show is about entrepreneurship along with a passion for building a beauty brand. We are in our third round of the competition. Three more rounds to go! Wish me luck,” she said.

On her future plans, she said, “I am very involved in serving my tribe Rincon band of Luiseño Indians located in San Diego County. My hope is to continue to share who we are as Native people along with preserving our culture through the arts.”

“I am currently building an art gallery devoted entirely to Native American artists that will reside on the Indian reservation and open in 2021,” she said.

Regarding her daily motivations, she said, “My passion for life stems from the gratitude I was taught as a child. I am grateful for my talents and those who support my vision. What motivates me each day is giving back to the world with creativity and hard work.”

On being a gallerist in the digital age, she said, “Being in the digital age as an art dealer is exciting and overwhelming. Sometimes I feel out of touch with the technology that drives awareness and ultimately revenue to the gallery. Today I was watching YouTube videos about attracting influencers. We are living in a virtual marketplace and I need to learn the rules of engagement. I feel like an adventurer in a foreign land but like anything, I will figure it out.”

She defined the word success as follows: “Success to me simply means doing the best you can with what you have been given. When I see what I am creating allow someone else to use their talents I know I’m still relevant on the planet. We should all be using our talents to bless each other to further the greater good. The day I am no longer giving I believe will be the day the creator calls me home.”
