Actor Adam Irigoyen chatted with Digital Journal's Markos Papadatos about "Away" on Netflix, as well as "Shake It Up" on the Disney Channel and "Centurion XII."
Irigoyen stars opposite Hilary Swank in the new Netflix series Away, which is available for streaming. He plays the role of Isaac Rodriguez. "It came out last Friday, and honestly, it has been awesome. People have given us a lot of love for this show and I am really grateful. I am glad that people have been liking it," he said.
He also stars in the upcoming indie drama film Centurion XII, which is in post-production. It deals with a Latina college student that is competing in Mexican horse dancing, only to discover she has APL (acute promyelocytic leukemia), a cancer in which the bone marrow produces too many promyelocytes.
As she goes to the hospital for treatment, her horse, Centurion, goes from being abused to starring as a celebrated champion. "That was another good time since it was set in the world of Mexican horse dancing," he admitted. "We went to Napa and filmed for 30 days and I had to dress up as a flashy horse dancer, which was a blast. Being on the set of an indie feature was great."
Irigoyen is well known for starring on the hit Disney Channel series Shake It Up opposite Zendaya and Bella Thorne. "Shake It Up was so much fun. I started off when I was 12 years old about to turn 13 years old. I honestly had the time of my life in it since it was my first real endeavor in the world of television. I learned so much at such a young age doing that for 3.5 years and I fell in love with acting and being on set," he said.
On being an actor in the digital age, he responded, "It is honestly cool. When I was first starting out, I was younger but the big thing was being on a network show or making a feature. Those were the two ways that you had success. Now, there are shows that are on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime that really catch people's attention these days. To be in a Netflix show with Hillary Swank was a really great opportunity."
For young and aspiring actors, he encouraged them to "never get complacent." "When I was younger, I had early success and it was a learning experience. After Shake It Up, I did a couple of pilots for Disney that didn't take off, and I went a year without work. I had to keep griding and keep working hard. Never stop honing your craft and don't get comfortable."
He also had recurring roles on such popular shows as The Fosters, and The Last Ship, along with guest starring roles on Major Crimes and 2 Broke Girls. He hails from Miami, Florida, and he is fluent in Spanish.
Regarding the title of the current chapter of his life, he said, "I'm trying my best to take more of a leadership role in my life and my career." "To be more intentional and more poignant in every decision I make," he said.
Irigoyen defined the word success as "inner happiness." "As long as I am doing something that I love and being around people that I love and that I care of, that's success," he said. "I don't need fame or fortune, all I need is the people that I trust and care for around me."
