Actress Selena Tan chatted with Digital Journal about her experience on the comedic film "Crazy Rich Asians," where she plays Alexandra "Alix" Young-Cheng, the youngest child of Su Yi.
Tan expressed that she is "ecstatic" over the success of Crazy Rich Asians, and noted that its something that she "couldn't have imagined happening in a million years."
She is drawn to her character "Alix," because she is very relatable. "Any typical auntie from Singapore, whether rich or poor, would be just like an Aunty Alix. She always has her pulse on what's happening in the family and is eager to make her presence felt," she explained.
On her plans for the future, Tan said, "I run a production company in Singapore called Dream Academy and our next projects include a re-run of a racially inspired comedy show called Meenah and Cheenah, and I am also working on a new Dim Sum Dollies show entitled Full Steam Ahead."
She shared that she is also excited about the sequel for Crazy Rich Asians. "Kevin Kwan has written three great books, and there is enough fodder for more than one sequel. Now that the characters in the book have found new life in the movie, I think the director and screenplay writers will have more than enough material to spin more movies about this crazy rich bunch," she said.
Digital transformation of acting and entertainment
On the impact of technology in the acting and entertainment business, Tan said, "The marketing and lead up to the premiere of Crazy Rich Asians could not have been so phenomenal if not for the powers of social media. All the chatter and the hashtags have really made this a real movement with the help of modern technology."
Regarding her use of technology in her daily routine as an actress, Tan said, "Everything I use now comes to me via my mobile device. I receive news about work. I do my research and carry out my rehearsals with my mobile phone. I would not be able to function at all without my phone."
For aspiring actors, Tan encouraged them to "just go out" and to "keep doing what they are passionate about."
She concluded, "Everyone should go out and watch Crazy Rich Asians as it is a very good movie and they should expect to be entertained and whisked away to be entertained to a fantastical world of the uber-rich in Singapore."
