article imageActor Eddie Egan talks musical theatre, success and digital age Special

By Markos Papadatos     Sep 16, 2019 in Entertainment
Actor Eddie Egan chatted with Digital Journal about his latest endeavors and being a performer in this digital age. He also offered advice to young and aspiring actors.
Egan is starring in the musical theatre production of The Full Monty at the Argyle Theatre in Babylon on Long Island, where he plays the lead role Jerry Lukowski. "It is a blast. It is an exciting new theatre and they are in their second season," he said. "The cast and the creative team are all great. It is a really good community there."
He had nothing but the greatest remarks about artistic director Evan Pappas. "Evan brings so much experience to the show. His brand of comedy is a perfect fit for this kind of story. He knows how to bring the funny without losing the heart and the honesty, which is really how the show works best," he said.
When asked how he handles being dialogue-heavy (since he had to memorize a great chunk of dialogue and songs for this musical), he said, "It is definitely a lot but it is something that has come easily to me. I am able to integrate the blocking and it's easy to remember. I was cracking open the script right up to the opening week since there was so much."

Egan was also a part of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, where he served as one of the vocalists for the show. "That was awesome. That was something I show when I was a kid. To be on that massive, legendary Radio City stage is really cool," he said.
On being an actor in this digital age, Egan said, "It's interesting. I am not the most social media savvy person but it makes things easier in a lot of ways. If you are out of town and if you get an audition, sometimes you can shoot a video on your iPhone and send it off. Technology makes it easier to find work sometimes too."
For young and aspiring actors, he encouraged them to keep being active and productive. "Honestly, if you can sit around and think about what kind of actor you want to be and what you want to do, it's all about showing up at auditions and being comfortable putting yourself in uncomfortable situations. That's how you grow: when you put yourself outside of your comfort zone."
"If you love acting, you need to keep doing it and understand that failure is not necessarily a failure since you never know who will remember you from an audition that you didn't get," he explained. "Keep doing the work and being honest. Keep telling stories that you want to tell."
Egan defined the word success as "doing something that has an impact on somebody else for the better."
