article imageDoctor Who: The Time of the Doctor + trailers (VIDEOS)

By Mathew Wace Peck     Dec 14, 2013 in Entertainment
With just 11 days left to go till this year's Christmas episode of "Doctor Who," here's a round-up of the most recent trailers so far.
The Time of the Doctor receives marks the end of the Matt Smith era of Doctor Who, the 30-year-old actor, after four years in the role, handing over his sonic screwdriver, fez and TARDIS keys to Peter Capaldi.
At 55, Capaldi is almost twice Smith's age and the same age as William Hartnell, the actor who became the First Doctor some 50 years ago, in 1963.
Doctor Who is just one of the highlights BBC TV has on offer for Christmas Day. Other popular programmes include a second Christmas special for Call the Midwife, one of two new festive episodes for the BBC version of Brendan O'Carroll's sitcom, Mrs Brown's Boys, and the Christmas Day episode of the BBC's flagship soap opera, EastEnders, which has been on air since 1985.
But, first, the Doctor must save his current best friend — Clara Oswald — from the traditional Christmas dinner!
As well as in the UK, The Time of the Doctor will be shown on Christmas Day (or, as this is the ninth Christmas Day Doctor Who special in a row, should that be Doctor Who Day?) in America, Canada, Germany and parts of Latin America. Australia and New Zealand, meanwhile, will screen it on Boxing Day (Thursday, December 26), while Poland and some countries in Scandinavia have opted for Sunday, December 29.
Peter Capaldi's Doctor has actually already been seen in the series, albeit very briefly: he appeared fleetingly in The Day of the Doctor, the 50th-anniversary tale simulcast in 94 countries in November.
Capaldi has already filmed his first scene as the new Doctor, which is expected to appear towards the end of the Christmas special. Before that, viewers will experience the regeneration itself, but that's being kept tightly under wraps till the day.
In the meantime, courtesy of YouTuber BowTiesRCool, here's a video of all the Doctors' regenerations from the show's 50-year history:
Filming for Capaldi's first set of episodes is expected to start in January, with his first season being broadcast later in 2014.
