article imageA singer-songwriter that is as rare as a sweet sounding Victrola Special

By W. Mark Dendy     Jan 14, 2014 in Entertainment
Her Twitter profile describes her as “typically atypical:singer. songwriter. musician. love-lover.”
Descriptive as it may seem, Melissa Polinar is all that and then some.
She is a talented young musician with a strong will to “help others” through her music.
Polinar had a dream and a vision last year to make a full length album. Today, Jan. 14, 2014, that dream is fulfilled with the release of Calls & Echoes, and not only is it music to the ears, it is music good for the soul!
In an interview with Polinar, she said "I'm truly excited that the album is released. It's been a long time coming."
She said that she had “a catalog of more than 200 songs” that she had written. And like many other musicians she is passionate about her work. She said, “I wrote about breakups and life in general, growing pains.”
Polinar says she doesn’t write with any specific message, but said, “I want to be honest and positive. Always honest. I don’t want to be pretentious, somebody that I’m not.”
Not naming anyone in particular, Polinar said she had many mentors.
“All those that worked with me writing songs, teaching me to play guitar, piano. They are the ones that shaped me. My creativity comes from them.”
Her influences include Stevie Wonder and vocal jazz great Ella Fitzgerald, and she said her style is “kind of like those influences crossed with James Taylor.” Polinar said, ”I try to fuse the folk aspect of my playing and the soulful aspect of my singing.” Like a lot of singer songwriters, the young artist from the longhorn state Texas said, “James Taylor is a strong influence in my music.”
Polinar was born in the Philipines and moved to Texas at a very young age.
Even though no one else in her family is a musician, Polinar said, “My whole family has been very supportive of me pursuing my musical interests.”
She said that she enjoyed songwriting and performing equally. “The moment I finish a song, I get really giddy, a feeling of accomplishment…. But the moment I get to perform it in front of a crowd, it’s another reward, a kind of a high!”
Performing is something Polinar does with ease. The songbird has a beautiful soothing voice that mixes well with her skilled acoustic guitar playing.
She has performed one of her singles, "Skyline," for Knocksteady TV, a song that that would be a nice addition to a anyone's Tunes to relax to playlist.
Polinar is like a rare jewel, like an antique Victrola — full of beauty, full of passion, and full of songs yet to be written.
The talented young artist is not one for taking all credit either.
She said that it wouldn't be possible without the help of producers like David Ryan Harris, Jesse Barrera, and Josiah Bell, and recognizing her audience and fans, she said, "This independent album is a testament to me and hopefully to everyone that you can pursue your dream no matter where you are in your journey."
Calls & Echoes is available for purchase at this website.
