Tesla tells Model 3 reservation holders delivery dates delayed

Tesla has bumped back the delivery date for its Model 3 after admitting the company has struggled to mass produce the highly-anticipated vehicle.

Reservations holders received an email on Wednesday saying that the “estimated delivery timing will now be slightly later than we originally expected.” Electrek was the first to report news of the email.

Two reservation holders told Business Insider that their original delivery window has been pushed back by one month. Tesla customer Chad Hurin said he is now expecting his base Model 3 to arrive some time between November and January 2018. He originally had a delivery window of October to December.

Tommy Gaessler, a first-day reservation holder, said his timeline was also pushed back by one month. Gaessler ordered a dual-motor all-wheel-drive Model 3, an option that Tesla has said won’t be produced until Spring 2018. Gaessler now expects to receive the car between September and November 2018 instead of August to October 2018.

A Tesla representative did not return Business Insider’s request for comment.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in July that he anticipated the company would enter “production hell” for the Model 3. Tesla has widely missed its production targets; it only produced 260 sedans in September after planning to manufacture 1,500 vehicles in September.

Tesla also originally planned to produce 5,000 cars per week in December — a timeline that has now been pushed back to the end of the first quarter in 2018.

Tesla has said the bulk of its manufacturing issues have to do with two lines in the Gigafactory that have not been fully automated. Tesla and Panasonic make batteries at the Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada.
