A Kroger spokesperson said the 10,000 jobs will include part-time clerks and cashiers, as well as department heads and assistant store managers, reports WTVR Richmond. The announcement on Monday came a week after Wal-Mart announced it would be hiring an additional 10,000 workers.
Cincinnati, Ohio-based Kroger Co, operates stores under a number of brands in 35 states and the District of Columbia. In the past eight years, they have created over 86,000 jobs, and in 2016, Kroger hired over 9,000 veterans, reports the Christian Science Monitor.
In a statement, Tim Massa, Kroger’s group vice president of human resources and labor relations, said: “Kroger’s growth trajectory continues to create opportunities for our people to advance their careers – and to do that in a fun, team environment with great benefits.” Kroger and its subsidiaries today employ more than 443,000 associates.
Kroger is not the only American company adhering to Donald Trump’s call to hire more American workers, reports Reuters. The Kroger announcement came on the same day that Amazon.com Inc. said they would be creating 1,000 new jobs in its new distribution center in Colorado.
Auto parts retailer AutoZone Inc also announced last week they would be hiring 12,000 new full and part-time workers through this April, a move that is part of its normal hiring plans. When Trump took office on Friday, he was critical of American companies for not keeping more jobs in the U.S.
