article imagePhone hacking: Andy Coulson 'guilty', Rebekah Brooks 'not guilty'

By Mathew Wace Peck     Jun 24, 2014 in Business
Former "News of the World" employee Andy Coulson has been found guilty of conspiring to hack phones; while his co-defendant, Rebekah Brooks, also formerly of the "NOTW," has been found not guilty.
The verdicts were delivered at the Old Bailey in London at around lunchtime on Tuesday, June 24.
Meanwhile, Brooks's husband, Charlie Brooks, has been cleared of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, in regard to the concealing computers and documents from police. Ex-soldier and News International Director of Security Mark Hanna has also been found not guilty on the same charge.
Rebekah Brooks, Andy Coulson and a number of others linked to the now-defunct News of the World (NOTW) had been accused of a string of offences relating to the UK's phone-hacking scandal.
Brooks's not guilty verdict was for four charges, which included a conspiracy to hack phones between 2000 and 2006, the period when she was the editor of the News of the World.
Coulson, who is also a former editor of the News of the World, had denied three charges: "one of conspiring to hack phones; and two of conspiring to commit misconduct in public office by sanctioning payments to public officials for confidential royal phone directories," as has been reported by the Guardian.
Coulson was NOTW editor from 2003 to his resignation in 2007; he subsequently became the Communications Director to the British Prime Minister David Cameron, but was forced to resign that post in January 2011, as a result of the continued media coverage of the whole phone-hacking affair.
Other verdicts include not guilty for Brook's secretary, Cheryl Carter, and not guilty for the former NOTW managing editor, Stuart Kuttner.
The Old Bailey trial has been going for eight months trial, with Brooks having begun her defence in February this year. The jury retired to consider the charges almost two weeks ago on Tuesday, June 11.
