article imageOp-Ed: Direct sales on a budget

By Charity Tipton     Mar 29, 2014 in Business
Harrison - I know there are a lot of women out there that are in direct sales as a way to better their family's financial situation. I am one of them.
I know there are a lot of women out there that have taken on the business of direct sales with the goals to eventually be able to work from home and spend more time with their families. Even though the theory of staying at home sounds wonderful, and is, not everyone can afford to spend a lot of money to advertise to get their names out there. But I have found some great ideas to get your name out there and still stay in your budget. It will not happen overnight but you will be able to tell your kids that you did it for them.
I know that we all know about Vistaprint and we have all used them. Now if you use their designs you can get business cards and only pay the shipping. They also have affordable window decals but I know not everyone wants to use a decal on their windows so I have an alternative. You can get the windshield shade and put your decal on it. Most people have their cars parked longer than they are driving so when you are in Walmart or the grocery store have that shade up with your company info on it.
Most companies offer catalogs. But if you don't use all of the catalogs they are not wasted. You can use them in different ways. You can put a label on the expired catalogs and put them around town in doctors offices, hand them to the girl in the drive thru window, leave them in the office at your child's school. You can also Google tutorials on how to turn the pages of the expired catalogs into gift bags or even envelopes for party prizes.
An even easier advertisement idea is to print a couple of flyers to set up on your car. You can get boxes for free from the post office (and they will bring them to you) and glue or tape the flyer to it and just set it the outside of your window so that it can be seen when people walk by. Most people have smart phones these days and you can go online and get your own free QR codes. Put those on the flyers that way instead of people having to write the info down they can simply scan the code.
Most companies require you to do parties to make money. I know there are people out there that are not comfortable getting up in front of people to do a party. But you can work your way up to that. Have dinner with a couple of friends and show them the catalogs or samples of what you are selling. If you are in a comfortable setting like with friends then you are going to be more open to talking about what you are doing.
You can also spend a few hours at the mall. Not shopping but get one of the free boxes from the post office that I mentioned before, put some pretty wrapping paper on it (solid colors look best) and print out a sign that says "Ask me for a Catalog" and just sit. People will come up to you and ask for a catalog. This is great for those that are still a little skittish about walking up to people. This gets them to walk up to you and speak to your first.
I hope these tips were helpful. I plan on writing more on this subject as my experience widens.
