In a first, KFC India is trying out serving bowls that can be eaten. The bowls are made with tortillas and they will replace plastic bowls used for their dish called Rice Bowlz, a dish specifically made in India.
The bowls will be tested out in two restaurants in Bengaluru for a week. Depending on how the testing goes, the edible bowls may be used across the country. The bowls will be made fresh in the restaurants.
Rice Bowlz contributes to around 6 percent of the company’s domestic revenues, and they are one of the best-selling items at KFC India.
Rahul Shinde, MD of KFC India, said the company will not charge more for the edible bowls. He added that they will wait to see what kind of response they generate and they may consider rolling out the concept to other items on the menu.
Shinde said the company was trying to find ways to find a cost effective and sustainable long-term solution to replace plastics.
This isn’t the first time KFC has done something like this. In 2015, the company said it was going to launch edible coffee cups in the United Kingdom. The cups, named Scoff-ee Cup, was made from a biscuit and was wrapped in sugar paper and it was lined with white chocolate.
