Carney has taken up a role that combines both public policy and public relations. The official job title he holds is Senior Vice President for Worldwide Corporate Affairs. Amazon confirmed that they hired Carney on Thursday, and he started with them on Monday.
Amazon created the new department, and now Paul Misener and Craig Berman will be reporting to Carney. Misener and Berman were the heads of Amazon’s previous public policy and public relations teams, respectively.
Carney will report directly to Jeff Bezos, the CEO and founder of Amazon, according to Politico. As for his work on CNN, which is where he went to shortly after resigning from his position as press secretary, he will no longer continue it because he will focus full time on Amazon. While at CNN, Carney was a senior political analyst.
Carney will be splitting his time between Seattle and Washington, D.C, according to ABC. Seattle is where Amazon’s headquarters is located.
Amazon is not the only tech company to hire a popular face from Washington. Seven months ago, Uber, the car-riding sharing app, hired David Plouffe, who managed Obama’s 2008 campaign.
