Chipotle just can’t shake the bad PR — This time its a drug bust

Mark Crumpacker, Chipotle’s chief creative and development officer, was placed on administrative leave on Thursday after he was charged with drug possession and accused of having a connection to a “high-end” cocaine delivery service in New York.

In an email to the New York Times, Chris Arnold, a company spokesman said, “We made this decision in order to remain focused on the operation of our business and to allow Mark to focus on these personal matters.”

Arnold added that other executives had already been assigned to take over Crumpacker’s work. It’s worth mentioning that according to Fortune, Crumpacker is one of Chipotle’s highest paid executives, having received $4.3 million last year. As Fortune points out, while Chipotle is in no way involved with the alleged crime, the stench from the incident will still be hard to wash off.

Major drug bust in Manhattan
Crumpacker was just one of 18 “customers” reeled in when the bust went down, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said. Cocaine drug kingpin, Kenny “Jay” Hernandez, 35, and his fellow dealers, Felix “Jake” Nunez, 27, and Oscar Almonte, 29, were charged with allegedly selling over $75,000 worth of nose candy.

Most of their sales were made in delis, Duane Reade, and CVS stores where customers could powder their noses in the beauty products aisles. The dealers were alleged to have also sold their wares in bodegas, restaurants, bars, hotels and even had a delivery service that brought the product to the customer’s workplace, for a price.

Vance said the “premium service” was double what the price of high-quality coke sold for on the street, going for $200 to $300 a pop on delivery. “This was a high-end, on-demand service,” Vance said.

Some of the “repeat customers” included several white collar individuals. Katie Welnhofer, 29, who works on “Mornings with Maria” on Fox Business, was indicted. She had her drugs delivered to her Chelsea apartment. After a court appearance, she was held on $15,000 bond.

Christopher Dodson, a client associate at Merrill Lynch was held on $30,000 bond on charges of buying $7,600 in cocaine. Crumpacker was also indicted, but it was unclear at the time if he was already in custody says the New York Daily news.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
