The growth in DevOps and Fast IT is highlighted in a new report from Venafi (a privately held cybersecurity company). While the focuses on security vulnerabilities and proposes actions, it highlights a number of growth areas in relation to business machine-to-machine communication.
The report is titled “The Machine Identity Crisis: How the explosion of machines is affecting the security of machine-to-machine communications” and it is hosted by Data Breach Today.
The advantages that can be garnered from cloud computing are speed, agility, efficiency and economies of scale. These are seen as the driving forces behind a software develop,ment concept called DevOps (which is sometimes called Fast IT).

DevOps is a term for a group of concepts focused on building, evolving and operating rapidly-changing resilient systems at scale. It also encompasses, according to Agile Admin, the “practice of operations and development engineers participating together in the entire service lifecycle, from design through the development process to production support.”
DevOps is also about taking popular frameworks and methodologies so they tandem across the entire systems-development life cycle. This allows a business to have agile development, continuous integration and continuous delivery.
The Venafi report shows how dramatically speeding up software delivery has become vital for many businesses. This is especially with the development of incremental change in smaller segments of software programs.
Many Fast IT developers make use of cloudbased, self-contained runtime environments (or ‘containers’) to operate applications based on individual modules (‘microservices’ This evolution has led to the creation of machines and multiplies that are becoming increasingly complex.
As a sign of the level of growth with DevOps, Gartner anticipates that by the end of 2018, 50 percent of enterprises will be running containers in their production environments. The big driver for this is Internet of Things-generated data.
This brings with it cybersecurity concerns, especially the challenge of generating and securing machine identities, which are necessary to meet their machine speed and scale.
