Amazon made its plans to create jobs on Thursday. The company said the positions will be for workers across the country and across all experience and skill levels. Most of the jobs will be at fulfillment centers, including the new ones being built in Texas, New Jersey, California and Florida.
The benefits will include up to 20 weeks of paid leave and extensive parental benefits. Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, released a statement that said one of Amazon’s guiding principles is innovation and it has created hundreds of thousands of jobs in America. He said the jobs were not just based in silicon Valley or Seattle, but they’re in Amazon’s fulfillment centers, customer service networks and other facilities in local communities throughout the country.
Sean Spicer, the incoming White House press secretary, said the announcement was made after Jeff Bezos and other heads of tech companies met with president-elect Donald Trump. Spicer added that Trump was pleased to have played a role in the decision.
Amazon’s plans come at a time when other retailers are slashing jobs. Last week, Macy’s announced that 10,000 jobs would be lost as it closes stores. The Limited also announced it was closing its entire fleet of physical retail stores, which resulted in 4,000 jobs lost.
