IT Company Behind Beijing Olympics Break Their Own Records

You may have enjoyed the recent Olympic Games without realizing the data-transferring power going on behind the scenes. Atos Origin is the IT firm behind the Beijing Olympics, and they recently said they transmitted event results within 0.3 seconds.

Compared to its work during the Games in Athens in 2004, Atos Origin accomplished the following impressive IT feats:

• Securely processed over 80% more competition data for media and news agencies worldwide – totalling 1.5 million messages
• Enabled almost 50% more stories to be published each day in English by the Olympic News Service – totalling an average of 500 stories a day.

Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee said in a press release obtained by DigitalJournal.com:
Through the IT infrastructure that Atos Origin has designed, built and operated during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the competition results have been viewed and read by more people and on more channels – web, mobile phone and TV – than ever before.

Atos said it introduced a new technology for sports broadcasters: the Remote Commentator Information System "enables commentators to access competition results from the studios in their home countries in a fraction of second via touch screen PCs. It also provides background information on the athletes and sports to help them add colour to their commentaries."

Let's hope the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver enjoys the same IT excellence.

Great job as they predicted it before. Sadly NBC had the worst coverage, couldn't follow the Olympics properly. The Silverlight player was horrible.
