On Tuesday, one of pop music's great saxophonists passed away. Leroi Moore died from complications from an ATV accident he suffered in June. Moore is widely known as the long-time saxophonist for the Dave Matthews Band, a popular pop-rock band.
Dave Matthews started the band with Moore and drummer Carter Beauford in 1991 in Charlottesville. Since then, DMB has sold over 31 million units in the U.S., putting them in the Top 100 highest-selling music acts of all time, according to
Entertainment Weekly.
On a personal note, I grew up with Dave Matthews and I've always found the music powerful and layered. As much as Dave contributed to the songwriting, it was the jam band's contributing musicians that gave it this vibe. Whether it was violinist Boyd or Moore on the sax, these artists added a raucous rhythm to DMB.
My condolences go out to Moore's family and the band. I hope DMB continues to tour and record new albums, although Moore will be a tough guy to replace.
