China Erects Wall to Hide Run-Down Stores From Beijing Visitors

It's no secret China wants to keep a clean image during this year's Olympic Games, held in Beijing. So what does a country do with run-down areas of the city that look horrible? The simple answer is build a wall to hide it.

Boston.com has a pretty interesting article and video (see below) about this Chinese vanishing act:

...the 8-foot brick wall Chinese authorities have erected down the south side of Luomashi Boulevard, obstructing a row of rundown storefronts...Walls like it have been built in many parts of the bustling city, as some 500,000 foreigners have come to town for the Games - part of the government's pursuit of perfection, albeit sometimes a Potemkin perfection, in the way the ancient capital presents itself to the world.

Not exactly a wall of silence, now is it?

I can understand the desire to make the area asthetically pleasing to the eyes, but I find this wrong. It's like a lie.

Video not available. In more civilized parts of the world I'm sure they would have ousted the riffraff and gentrified the area.
