A Few New DJ Features

We've just committed a bunch of changes we've been working on behind the scenes, and while some are small, they add a great deal of functionality:

- Among our newest rollout, you will now be able to hover over an image upload in our Live Events widget and see a preview of the photo without having to click through. In live events you will see "So and so uploaded image: John McCain" so just hover over the title "john mccain" and you'll see a preview. Now you only have to click on an image event if you are interested in it.

- Because our entire front page runs on javascript, it used to have problems remembering where you were if you clicked your browser's "back" button. We've made changes so you can now click "back" on your browser to navigate from within an article back to the front page without losing your position in the widgets. So if you are on page 3 of sports news, you can click on an article and read it, then click back and you won't be taken back to the main page -- it will remember right where you were in the sports news widget.

- We've also changed the way Groups work to give users more power; you will no longer be able to comment on a private Group unless you are approved to join the Group. We've done this because we believe private groups should be private, so you now must be approved to comment in a Group if it's not open to the public. Open Groups can still be commented in by anyone (whether they are a member of the Group or not). Thanks for the feedback Sheba.

- Giving Group Admins more power to control content; If you are an admin of a Group, you can also remove comments made to blogs in your Group. We highly recommend you leave everything because we think freedom of speech is of paramount importance (even if someone is disagreeing with you) but if you get spam posts or something truly nasty, you have the power to delete it.

- We've made a few design updates too, including black header bars on the front page so the widgets stand out more, headlines are bigger and bolder inside articles and we now feature links to "Related News" and "Next In..." beside every headline (thanks for the feedback about Related News being a cool feature, Carolyn).

- Another small change includes switching between the comment and voter tabs inside an article; you can now write out a comment and flip between the comment and vote tabs without losing what you had written (thanks for the feedback Atrox).

- We have a number of other changes littered throughout the site in an effort to increase performance and make it easier on all members.

Browse through the site and enjoy!

Thanks to Alex and Chris for letting me know.

Did you also change something on the Comment/Vote thing in the articles? That is really why I noticed it, there is this big blue button for the "Comment" thing and a blue line running across the page now. This is only happening in the articles, not the blogs.

Whoa, now I get this big green "Thanks for your vote" pop up when I vote for a blog! Neat.

But not when you vote for articles?

Some great changes and one in particular that always "annoyed" me, thanks Atrox. :)

There have been so many changes for the over a year and a half that I have been here which proves DJ's staff is on the ball and always looking for ways to improve the site.
    Great job staff! :)

The change I mention above for the comment/vote thing also included a slight design touch-up. When you say "big blue button" do you mean huge? It's shouldn't be whale-sized. Do you like the change? Do you notice it switches between votes/comment tab much faster?

Yes, I did notice that, but I just thought it was because I am in the city and not using that g*****n dialup *smiles sweetly as she grits her teeth knowing later tonight she'll be back to dialup*.

And no, it is not huge, it just stands out now because it is a different color and it draws your eye to it immediately. And yes, I do like the changes, the pages seem much cleaner/crisper now.

Taking a quick look around I see something I asked about has also changed which I am very happy about since it was causing me a few problems. Thank you.

Also, I like the fact that the time is not on the "Live Events" feed. That must have been a bit cumbersome for your systems to keep updating it all the time and it really didn't serve much of a purpose.

By the way, Chris, what changes have been "committed"? *pick pick pick away ...* Kind of a strange word to use, especially for a wordsmith!

LOL. Poor word choice Carolyn -- it's a technical term used from a programming perspective, and I hear Alex say it so much it rubs off on me.
