As if Facebook weren't popular enough, the social network now seems to also be taking over in the mobile space.
According to
TechCrunch, the company announced it has more than 1 million users on its iPhone application.
Facebook's app is the 6th most popular free application available through Apple's App Store. Apple no longer releases numbers for downloads, so TechCrunch is relying on Facebook to provide download stats.
As the iPhone 3G continues to get huge media exposure and sales numbers, developers are raking in publicity and user bases are swelling. Facebook must be happy with this stat and it's a big indicator to developers and the industry that mobile Web access will likely boom in coming months and years.
With so many users tethered to their iPhones, I also suspect other cellphone manufacturers will be forced to develop more smartphones that utilize mobile social networks. Cellphone providers will likely put enormous pressure on manufacturers to tap this market. After all, when you're on a social network on your phone, your cell provider is charging for data transfer. That is a lot of future potential revenue.
