Mexico City, Mexico
Today is Earth Day and it reminds me of the first Earth Day in 1970. I was asked to speak at the first Earth Day in New York City, Queens.
I was invited by the local High School to address the student body on the environment. I was considered an important environmentalist since I had successfully defeated the city of New York and the Federal Government in building a massive highway program in New York City, and the entire metropolitan area; New Jersey and Connecticut.
As a result of my fight I was able to get the law changed requiring environmental impact studies on all future highway building. also, I got a portion of the gigantic High Way Building Fund to allocate money for public transportation.
In addition, I was able to raise the consciousness of the world that highways are not just ways of moving automobiles, but that the construction of these highways has huge impacts on the community. It divides neighborhoods; it divides animals and plants from their migration and sources, and can destroy whole species.
What is important about this story is as an individual I was able to make a huge impact on the environment. I was just one guy who started out to save his house from being taken by this project and it evolved to an important environmental issue.
It only takes one determined and dedicated individual to make a difference in this world, so, every little thing you do to protect the environment is an important part of the whole picture.
