Networking on DJ

I just wanted to share a bit of the secret to my success here on Digital Journal. I have found that it is all in the networking.

Commenting- If you want people to notice you, you have to comment. Commenting on articles that interest you and starting thoughtful discussions is a great way to intrigue people and get them interested in your writing. Along the way you can even make friends. Making friends is another way of networking, and there is nothing wrong with that. I have made friends with many people on here, some I have come to deeply care about, and some who are just fun to be around. Either way, we have a good working relationship even when we disagree.

Voting- voting up other peoples articles who you find interesting or newsworthy is the backbone of this website. That being said your voting say quite a bit about you. Along with voting is subscribing to subjects or writers. Currently I am subscribed to three writers who I have found that I upvote often.

Inviting others to DJ- I have found inviting others to this website is a great way of networking. Two people I invited are PatGG ( my mother) and my husband Tom. My mother mostly just reads and upvotes my stories. She has very little time in her day to play around on the Internet so she basically reads and upvotes me, I have seen her vote up others from time to time. Tom initially was going to get on to do the same, upvote and read my stories. Support me as I attempted to start a new career as a freelancer. Well, he ended up contributing. By inviting two people to DJ I have added to the hits, the upvotes, and thus the money from advertising. This is an aspect of networking because my mother has talked to people about the website, as has Tom. While some of the guests don't upvote, they do read.

To make it on DJ you HAVE to network. Eventually if you quit commenting or voting your votes will go down. I have noticed this when I haven't had time to be social. This is a social networking website in a way.

    Well said Sam.

I find that I tend to read and vote on those who do the same for what I write. For those who never vote on anyone's articles I don't even bother with them anymore unless it is a subject that really interests me.

For those who regularly vote and/or comment on what I write I always look for what they have written and at least vote them up.

There are so many new writers that if you want people to vote and comment on what you write you need to do the same for other writers.

As an observer I have to agree with this. I think I've said this in the past but you really only need to look at Chris V. (cgull) to prove this works. He went for almost a year as the #1 CJ on DigitalJournal.com and he's always ranked high. He comments on almost everyone's articles. It works to get your name out and he does it out of pure passion and interest.

I know I don't often comment but when I do it's because something touches me. That doesn't mean I don't upvote.

Now I do admit I rarely upvote for those who don't upvote anyone else. I also don't generally upvote those who are attackers of others. Call someone an idiot for their opinions and I tend to remember that.

I have invited some people to DJ telling them to vote for others, read and learn.

I've been lucky to have been in the top 5 for every month except for the first month I joined so I guess I am doing something right. :)

I also wanted to add that those early comments by established CJs helped me tremendously when I started writing for DJ. Bob Ewing and Deb in particular gave great comments and advice when I was starting out. For that reason and of course the fact that their articles are top notch I seek out what they write about.

I do admit the longer I am on here that I get more and more picky about upvoting. I want my votes to mean more than just you're my friend so anything you write will get my vote. I vote for quality and timeliness. I am less "judging" when a story is breaking news because I know how hard it is to get it "perfect" when you're racing the clock to bring important news quickly to this medium.

Okay this motormouth is shhing for a while.

    And Sam great post.

I too was warmly welcomed and made friends shortly after I came aboard. All advice and help has been greatly appreciated, and I try to recipricate in any way that I can to our 'newbies'. Other than that, I agree with what everyone has written thus far...
