Amazingly, I read a headline yesterday entitled (or something to the effect): "Time to unleash the Monster." After two games and 10 goals against, apparently Vesa Toskala is finished as a Leafs starter and possibly even as a Leaf and bring on the Monster, Jonas Gustavsson.
How do you feel about this? Goal-tending wins you games. Sure, you have to have a solid defense in front of your goalie (something that was completely lacking in Saturday night's game against Washington, as evidenced by at least two of the goals against), and of course you have to score goals to win, but, there is such a thing as making the key stop. Like on the first shot of the game, perhaps?
Sentiments run hot and cold here in TdotOh. I watch them jump on and off the bandwagon so fast it makes my head spin. I am old enough (just barely) to remember the last time the Leafs won the cup (gasp!). I have seen my share of agonies (remember the Ballard years?) and terrible defeats (still hate Gretzky for that high stick). Yet through it all, I remain a Leaf fan
I have said controversial (to some of our friends, anyway) things like "The Toronto Maple Leafs will never win a cup with Sundin." ... this was said the day of the draft when our beloved Captain, Wendal Clark was traded to the Quebec Nordiques (the Nordiques of all teams!) for Captain Mats. And, just last year, I said "The Toronto Maple Leafs will never win a cup with Toskala." I don't know exactly what is wrong with Toskala, can he handle the pressure and fishbowl that is Toronto? Or is he just that bad? Who knows, but I just saw another headline that says "Looks Like Toskala is Toast." Ah me, two games in and the fun begins.
