Using Foreign Language Sources

Hi,
I've recently been asked by the editor to make changes in an article because I was quoting a foreign-language webpage (in translation.) David wanted me to first find the story in English, I presume for credibility's sake.
Now, I see the editor's position on this, but I do think that those of us who speak languages other than English and who can find stories not available in English (or not yet) should go ahead and write them. Maybe later we can add an English URL if one of the English-language websites, newspapers, news agencies etc., picks up the story.
Also, there will be times when the story isn't picked up. I wrote an article some months ago about a mass grave of Croatians found. Now the West is not interested in Croats killed in WWII. This way, DJ got the story. If we'd relied on the Western agencies, well, we would never have got it.
Isn't it a great waste to get people who read Russian, Chinese, Dutch, German, French, Hungarian, Afrikaans or whatever and not use their talents?
What do you think?
