This is my workplace.

I have decided to take my freelance writing to a fulltime job. That means Digital Journal is now my workplace.

The Digital Journal Code of Conduct even encourages us to think of this place as a workplace.

Think of DJ as a Workplace
Citizens and Citizen Journalists work as colleagues. Personal attacks and hate speech directed at an individual, race or religion would absolutely never be tolerated in the real world and they are not welcome and will not be tolerated here.

Well for a bit the atmosphere around here was rather nice. People disagreed without being jerks, we had our problem customers, but I am concerned we are going back into the direction of having attacks rather than debates.

So I am just wondering, should we expect harassment at work? Where does the internet culture of free speech and the cross over into a healthy work environment meet?

Interesting post, and I welcome you to your "workplace," where your articles are truly impressive. As has been your conduct.

Online harassment at a digital "workplace" is always an iffy issue, and has to be considered on a case by case basis. There really is no one way to deal with harassment online, since forums give people a sense of anonymity...which is both a danger and an appeal.

And to answer your question, no, you shouldn't expect harassment at work. And when it happens. DJ staffers like to know about it.

DJ has been great about keeping it civil and fair around here, so there are no worries there. I just don't want to see it go downhill when we were getting to a point that every day is some drama fest. lol

But it did make me think, where is stating an opinion crossing the line. I mean that is a hard issue to deal with.

In a real world workplace people disagree all the time, there is back stabbing and politics, but at some point it gets to be too much. I mean here we have the freedom to disagree about pretty much any topic. I love it. But sometimes it feels like I am sitting in some kind of board meeting when all of a sudden one person decided to go on full out attack of another. In the "real world" you don't go into a board meeting and start calling people names, attacking thier character and thier ideas as well as thier intelligence. There is a matter of decorum to think of.

So I was thinking well this isn't really a board room, I mean for instance I can make a sweeping opinion about a situation and a group of people that someone may take personally. In which case they are going to respond personally against me. I am in the role of " a voice" so naturally I should expect opposition.

I was hoping this would start a dialogue with more people about what exactly a digital workplace should constitute, because after all this isn't just a forum. We get paid for our opinions, some of us even make a living off of it.

And thanks for the compliment on my writing David, but my conduct lol. *wink*

Sam I just saw this and it is excellent. I don't know at what point in time that I began to think of digitaljournal as my workplace but I do.

When I am asked what do you do or do you work I say "Yes I an a citizen journalist and I work for digitaljournal.com out of Toronto."

I agree that some things seem to be getting out of hand again. I finally just left for a little while tonight as someone was just going from post to post ranting about people who don't see things as he does as "loons."

I see that as totally unnecessary and I don't think it belongs on a news site. I am sure that there are other sites where that type of ranting is acceptable.

If a person can't give their opinion which might be different than most or different than some without being attacked or called names that isn't right or should be acceptable.

I don't blame you for being irritated over the loon thing. It makes me roll my eyes everytime. =)

When the whole live events is filled with one name only and every part of the comments that can be seen has the word "loons" in it than I think this is for the birds and time to leave.
