I'm broke, I'm broke

Posted Sep 16, 2009 by  Cynthia Trowbridge in Business 12 comments
I'm broke and I am about to lose my house and I ain't got money for gas. But I can afford to smoke and have a cell phone.
I'm out of a job and behind on my bills but I have one of them fancy new cell phones with a GPS built in.
I'm broke but I have a cell phone and when I go out to lunch with friends I order one of the most expensive lunches on the menu plus I think I will have one of those delicious $5 desserts.
I don't know how I am going to pay my bills but I still can charge more on one of my credit cards so I can go out on the town with my friends tonight.
Sigh, do I have to feel sorry for folks like this?

I was broke, and I had a cell phone. Of course my MIL paid for it and insisted on getting it for us for emergencies, and because we had no home phone.
    =)
Things are not always as they seem. On the surface you can get mighty irritated with poor folk who waste, but don't begrudge them that desert, that might have been the only nice thing they have done for themselves in a very long time, and the bank won't let you pay just 5 bucks on a house payment.
begrudge them the GPS though, that is just a waste if it is not mandated for work.

These are actual people I know or knew a few years ago. The dessert I don't begrudge to anyone but when someone cries I don't have any money repeatedly and because of a group I was in I was able to go out to lunch with her many times. Always the same, I am so poor, orders something that is the most expensive on the menu and of course a dessert.

Now that is just annoying. Probably hoping someone would pay for their meal.

I do realize that cell phones are now the only phone that some people have. But do people need the most expensive one?
Can't they get one where maybe you buy a card every three months and not talk on the phone for hours or text all day.
I realize my generation is different but when I see how some are and I can see numerous ways were they could cut back or cut out spending I just don't feel very sympathetic.
There was a time when I couldn't even afford a new lipstick so I do know how it is to not have any extra money.

That was exactly the impression I got.

I know a few people who can't pay their bills but can afford just about anything else that they want.
I also know one person who swears they can't afford a decent diet but they can afford to smoke forty a day.
It's just a matter of priorities I'm afraid.

I don't have any real income, because I'm a full time student, but I have a smart phone. I don't complain of poverty, but I can't buy nice clothes or dine in fancy places or travel much right now. It's just what you consider a priority like Jane said. For me, eating healthy, even though fruits and vegetables are more expensive than junk food, is a priority. My iphone is also a priority. Why is a smart phone a priority? It's like a little computer for me. In between classes if I need to look something up, when I'm lost and need a map, if I'm buying furniture for the new apartment and want to send a pic of it to my mom for her approval before I get it.. there are a million ways my phone is like my lifeline. I'd be okay with a wardrobe of two pairs of jeans and three tee shirts and live on noodles and lentil soup as long as I can keep my phone.

Too many people live this way. Bills aren't being paid but they go out and buy a new outfit when they already have a closet full of nice clothes.
This is the way it should be. You know what your priorities are and live accordingly. I would imagine that you don't run up charges that you know you shouldn't be doing or know you can't afford.

We have one of those phones were we buy minutes via a card. It works fine. I am a old fogy and don't understand why people in our days have to keep in touch with one another every moment of the day. It seems to me it takes much longer to text some one then it takes to
    talk to them.

That is the type of cell phone that I have. If you don't use the minutes they keep accumulating. That makes it handy when traveling so I can use the time to keep in touch with my family.
