The Breaking News feature, BN from now on, easier to type lol! is an excellent idea, and it is particularly innovative for a CJ site. All the Mainstream media (hate that term, does someone have another one?) have them of course but few CJ sites.
I have used and followed this feature since its introduction and have come to a couple of conclusions regarding the way it works.
I don’t have figures here, but it seems to me that it’s vote and country driven. That means driven by those members who find such-and-such a piece of news interesting, or not.
But that is not what BN is about. It is not a question of who votes what. BN is about new and important news, whatever its nature and wherever it comes from.
I am someone who happens to enjoy the readership and support of many people here, (thanks all) so I am not writing this for “Wanna Be Front-Paged” reasons. My work is front-paged here more than most and I am very grateful for that.
But it is becoming evident that in its present form, BN breaks quickly on DJ when it involves news from the United States and Canada, but much less so when it is about the rest of the world.
I put up a BN post today about a story that has been front-paged on all the major media since it began - the missing cargo ship Arctic Sea. The post announced that a ransom demand had been received by the ship's owners.
At the moment I put it up on DJ it was only available on AFP, the BBC’s ticker-tape and Le Figaro’s BN.
No other of the six outlets I checked at the time carried it.
It never appeared on DJ as BN.
But at the moment I post this, 90 minutes afterwards, it is on every front page on the planet.
We have completely missed it.
Question.
Is it DJ readers who decide what Breaking News is?
Or the news itself?
Maybe DJ should consider a non-vote based Breaking News section, or tickertape?
I for one am getting a little fed up of taking the time to put up BN articles from elsewhere but the United States and Canada that are read all over the world but not here on DJ.
